I used to have flight anxiety to the point where I wouldn’t be able to sleep the night before a flight, drenched in sweat and feeling nauseous. I realize that many people have it worse and cannot even fly at all. That being said, if you are like me and still fly but it makes you really anxious, I hope that my tips on how I “cured” my flight anxiety help you!
‘Before the Flight’ Routine
Today, I can get on a plane with fairly low levels of anxiety. However, there are definite steps I had to take to get to this point. My favorite thing to help my flight anxiety is having a before flight routine. I always purchase a bottle of water and a pack of gum. I have a playlist on my phone (as well as the app Brainwaves which is AWESOME!) that is specific for flying filled with relaxing music. I also try to choose my seat online if I can. Taking these steps really helps calm me down before a flight and make me feel “prepared”.
Fly With Someone
If you have flight anxiety, it is also really helpful to travel with someone you trust. Being with that person can help ease your flight anxiety and distract you if you are anxious. I also find that when I travel with someone, I am more relaxed in general.
Find Distractions
Download a movie on your phone or bring an interesting book with you on the flight. These distractions will help take your mind off flying and allow you to focus on something else. I find that if I am editing my YouTube videos on flights, that I don’t even focus on my anxiety. Coloring and knitting are also great options.
Arrive With Plenty of Time
Arrive to the airport early. I like to be there earlier than I need to be. Not only does this make the process of security a lot less stressful but it also lets me slow down, buy my ‘before the flight routine’ items and use the bathroom.

Flying anxiety is so real! I’m thankful I don’t have it, but occasionally I get really bad driving-anexity and it always helps to have someone in the car with me!
I bet that is scary! Glad you have found ways to help ease your anxiety 🙂
Ugh I hate flying! Great tips!
Thank you Tilley! I feel you girl!
I get a little jittery during flights too! Having a good book and someone with you are two helpful things!

Absolutely! A good book is a must 🙂
These are really realistic tips — a lot of people who I know are afraid of flying say they like to have a stiff drink sometimes too!
Hahah I can imagine that would help! And I just turned 21 a few months ago so I’ll have to give this one a try:)

I don’t really have flying anxiety, but I always like to show up AT LEAST 2 hours early (if not 3!). Better early than late! Great tips!
