You glance at the clock and groan. It is already 10PM and you have a lot of work still to do before morning. Late study nights are commonplace on college campuses, and when they can’t be avoided, it is important to take steps to make them more manageable! Today I want to share with you my favorite tips to survive late study nights.
Protect Your Eyes
Do you ever notice that after staring at your computer for hours or staying up really late that your eyes are red, swollen and painful? The good news is, this can stop! Another step I take to protect my eyes is try and look up from the computer screen every thirty minutes or so and focus on something far away. Cozy Up
I find that I usually get cold during late night study sessions. If I grab a blanket and scarf or put on an extra layer, the library seems much more cozy! Its also important to not study in a room or location that is too warm though as that can lead to drowsiness.
Limit Caffeine & Sugar
Unless you are trying to pull an all-nighter (which I don’t recommend simply because it isn’t healthy nor conducive to good studying!), try and limit your caffeine intake and the amount of sugar you are eating. Instead, try and fill up on healthy snacks. You want to avoid experiencing a crash!
Don’t Study in Bed
Unless you want to fall asleep immediately, don’t study in your bed!! Anytime I have to stay up late to get homework done, I try and pick a spot that I know will motivate me and wont send me into a sleepy state.
Exercise Before You Hit the Books
Exercise makes you feel more energized and more awake! Do a light workout before you study to get your blood pumping. This will help you focus more later on as well.

Exercise is amazing to get you excited for studying. I feel like wearing out my body is the best way I can get anxious to use my mind.
I don’t think this is the best practice (naturally we all prefer to study during the day) but if I’m going to be studying late I try to make it happen accidentally by starting to study early and then I just stop looking at the clock. The more I think about how late it is, the more I just want to tuck into bed and rest my eyes for thirty seconds that inevitably turn into the whole night 🙂
