I’ve always been a homebody. My favorite nights involve snuggling up on the couch with my family, watching our favorite movies and enjoying each other’s company. Sadly, since moving to college two years ago, those nights are now few and far between.
I have realized how difficult it is to be thousands of miles from home, in a place so different from where you grew up. The truth is, in high school I really wanted to leave Utah – to see what else was out there and to experience something new. I was lucky to get the chance to do just that when I moved to Boston for college. But, now after two years, when I do visit Utah, I realize how much I miss it.
However, I have discovered that home is so much more than a place. Sure, Utah will always be the state I grew up in and came to love – the beautiful mountains, the stunning views, the incredible forests. But now, my definition of home is changing.
I have realized that home is the place you long to be and it can be more than one place. I have realized that home is the people that surround you. For me, Dani has been that person: my “family” in Boston, my support and my rock. He has gotten to visit Salt Lake with me twice now, and each time we have been able to experience and see many of the places I grew up visiting, including Alta Ski Resort – a spot that will always have a special place in my heart and where we had the chance to snap these cute pictures before we part ways for the semester.
As sappy as it sounds, I am so grateful that Dani and I can share this life together. Of course, I miss all of my biological family more than words can explain and I long for the days when we can all be together again, in the same city or a car ride away. But I am lucky to have found someone who makes me feel at home no matter where I am.
