When I think of last summer, one word comes to mind: transition. I moved to a completely new city and state and started my first tech internship. Needless to say, I was not only nervous about my new job but also about housing, transportation, meeting new people and how I would get furniture (I mean let’s be real, a blow up mattress can only last so long). Surprisingly, most things went off without a hitch and I ended up having a fairly successful summer. However, I definitely learned a lot along the way and I want to share with you my favorite ways to help settle into a new city during a internship to help ease some of your stress and worry!
Take Care of Housing and Furniture in Advance
Honestly, the last thing you want to be worrying on day one of a new job is whether or not you have a bed to sleep on! CORT Furniture Rental is an incredible company that will deliver your furniture to your new apartment and set it up for you. It is there when you need it and it takes a lot of the hassle out of a big move. An added bonus for those of us on student budgets is that it is super affordable and nice quality furniture. It is so convenient to not have to stress about furniture when you are trying to make a good impression at your new internship!
Get Your Bearings of the New City
Try to allow yourself a few days before your internship starts to become familiar with your new home! It is a good idea to take out a map too so you can have a good idea of where you are for future reference.
Plan Your Route
While you are getting your bearings of the new city you are calling home, test out the route to your internship! If you already know how to get there, you will have a much more relaxed morning on day one of your internship.
Go to City Events
Don’t forget that you are in a brand new place with lots of brand new people to meet! Take advantage of this and go to different events being held in your new city. For example, last summer I went to the Arts Festival. It was a great (and free!) chance to learn more about the culture of my new home and also meet some new people—you never know if there is a potential best friend right around the corner!
I hope these tips gave you some good ideas on how to settle into a new city without too much stress and worry! Definitely check out CORT if you are looking for a fast, convenient and affordable way to rent furniture for your new pad! Let me know in the comments below if you are planning a big move anytime soon—I would love to hear from you!
